DTS-ES discrete 6.1 is ALSO backward compatible, all the audio that is contained onthe data trailer (6th channel) is mirrored in the standard surrounds for any 5.1 systems, and systems that don't recognize and can't handle the 6th channel. DTS offers BOTH a "discrete" 6.1 version called DTS-ES and a matrixed 6.1 version, which I believe they call DTS-EX.
